A rearview mirror glance at all behind
The rubble packed in boxes and my mind
Beside hope innocent and fear so blind
And blurry sketch of what I’d like to find
The demolition plays before my eyes
Crescendo and in infinite reprise
A futile masochistic exercise
While begging for the pain to make me wise
Like someone who knows how to build a life
A downward flickered glance at present tense
The rubble stowed behind a quick defense
That predicts every heartache past portends
And vigilance exhausts my common sense
From sandcastle to next along the road
To sharing drive thru meals with the crows
I ask those near the car, “where should I go?”
While begging for an answer I should know
Like someone who can trust themselves to grow
A forward looking glance at all ahead
The rubble still unused from timeline dead
Old stories of what home could mean instead
Their imprint staining each blank chapter red
Afraid to find myself in cage once more
Rebuilding foul familiar known before
With none to share in blame or boast or bore
While begging for a name, a home, a door
Like someone who can leave an inner war
A momentary glance at all within
The rubble cement-ready to begin
But roaring downpours run the mixture thin
Once dry it cracks to pieces once again
The thin days run and crumble all the same
Still waiting for the sketch to come in frame
Exhausted by my own resolve to change
While begging for the skill to beat the game
Like how to cure fresh concrete in the rain
